Paper and Paper Properties

‘Text’ weight paper is thin and is used for inner pages of a book or magazine.

‘Cover’ weight paper is thicker, heavier and sturdier, and is generally used as the cover of a book.

Coated Paper

Uncoated Paper

Coated papers come with a glossy and extremely smooth finish.

Uncoated papers do not have a glossy or satin-like finish. They are available in smooth and rough textures.

Known for exceptional ink holdout and quick ink dry ability. These are high quality paper with exceptional printability.

Ink is absorbed into the paper and thus takes longer to dry; however, high quality uncoated papers like Munken are designed for optimized printing.

Images come out sharper and cleaner after printing.

Images come out to be warmer, softer and less crisp.

Sharper images and text may make it slightly uncomfortable for eyes.

The subtle printing quality makes the text more legible.

Popular choice for magazines, pamphlets, advertisement supplements.

Popular choice for books, novels, catalogs, business stationery.

Yes, opacity is an important consideration. A sheet of paper must be adequately opaque to prevent show through from the reverse side.

In general, light weight papers or less stiff papers tend to curl up or wrinkle in the printer, resulting in jams while heavier weight papers may face runnability issues. Therefore, it’s important to choose the paper with the right stiffness.

Your selection of paper depends on what you want to communicate. To obtain the highest legibility, natural color papers, such as high white, white and cream, are the best. Light weight papers are good for text while heavier papers are commonly used as covers.

Also, the finish and print performance of a paper play a major role. Uncoated rough papers are highly absorbent and are optimized for offset press. Coated papersare known for exceptional ink holdout. But they generally produce sharper, clearer and more defined images.

Once you know your specific requirements, you need to consult your printer for understanding the type of printing job. Communicating early with a paper expert and your printer helps save time and money.

Actually, the decision to use either coated or uncoated paper depends on what you want to achieve with the final product. Uncoated paper is a better choice for messages that include lots of text. Because of its natural and gloss-free feel, it’s easier on the readers’ eyes. Coated papers are best for printing photographs.

Brightness of a paper has no impact on print performance; rather it enhances the contrast between the image and paper. Brightness is an important virtue for color printing. On the other hand, low brightness is suitable for extended periods of viewing and reading.

It’s important to understand paper properties because print results are greatly influenced by the surface properties of a paper. These affect ink lay down, absorption of ink and run-ability on the press. A rough paper is highly absorbent and has a lower print density. As surface smoothness decreases, the print density decreases. A paper with rough surface may print slightly lower quality text and images.

Moisture content plays a critical role in offset, inkjet and laser printing.

  • In offset printing, moisture content affects the interaction between the ink and paper and the press and paper.
  • In digital/laser printing, moisture content affects toner adhesion and the temperature of fuser roller. Lesser the moisture content, lesser reaction to fuser heat, better print performance.
  • In inkjet printing, higher than recommended moisture content results in ink spreading and drying delays.

This is why it’s important to purchase paper with the right moisture content and maintain its moisture content through proper handling.

Yes, paper with rough finish absorbs ink, which results in less definition and a less glossy finish. This is easy on the eyes of the readers, making the text more legible. The text and image on smooth and glossy surface are sharper, clearer and more defined. A glossy paper reflects more light, which makes it difficult for readers to read long texts. Smooth paper is generally used for bite size or easily digestible information.

Yes, the surface color has a great influence on print and legibility. Dark colors reduce the legibility as it becomes difficult for readers to read longer texts. Colors also have a direct impact on contrast between the paper surface and ink. Light color surface enhances contrast, print quality and legibility.

No, as of now we do not offer scored, perforated and custom-cut paper. But we intend to do it in future.

Properties such as thickness, grammage, smoothness/roughness, porosity, absorbance, whiteness, brightness and opacity distinguish different papers.

Acid-free paper is a paper which when infused in water doesn’t produce acid. Rather it yields a neutral or basic pH (7 or higher). The acid-free paper is also lignin and sulfur-free. Papersmiths, being a responsible paper merchant, takes pride in offering acid-free papers to its customers.

Papersmiths adopts a careful approach and makes every possible effort to reduce its environment footprint. Almost all our offerings are acid-free.

Extra white paper intensifies the color contrast. Blue colored text and pictures look extremely appealing on extra white surface.

When you click on a particular paper type or product on our website, you can find all possible details, including surface, texture, brightness, whiteness, opacity, weight, printability and digital applications

Virgin fiber is sourced from trees, alternative fibers and agricultural by-products whereas postconsumer fiber is recovered from household, industrial or institutional waste (products which can no longer be used for their intended purposes).

Papersmiths brings recycled paper from Lenzing Papier, an Austrian paper mill, which offers as good functionality as a virgin paper. High quality recycled paper from Lenzing Papier is smooth and offers great print performance.

When you browse our products, you will find complete information about them and their print performance. You can choose from our products accordingly. However, our Munken papers are optimized for offset printing but work equally well on all types of press; Hansol papers offer optimal performance on laser and Lenza papers perform well on inkjet and laser.

Definitely, paper affects the print quality. Coated papers produce sharper images while the pictures on an uncoated paper are warmer.

When it comes to the color, natural white is easier on the eyes; extra white intensifies the contrast. Cream is suitable for yellow pictures and gives a warm effect.

Papersmiths brings you Munken uncoated papers which are optimized for offset printing and work well on laser, inkjet and flexo press. But because uncoated papers are more absorbent in nature than coated papers, printing images are required to be prepared in prepress differently. This is done to accommodate the absorbency of uncoated papers.

All our papers guarantee optimal print performance. Even papers optimized for offset printing work well on inkjet, laser and flexo.

  • Choose the right paper. It should be sufficiently absorbent, opaque, smooth and thick. If you’re using a coated paper, it must be able to withstand the heat and pressure.
  • Consult your printer. They already have the experience and understanding of what combinations work best.
  • Make a clean scoring and cut. If trimming or folding is necessary, ensure clean edges.
  • Choose the right ink. Dry ink works better on rough and uncoated paper.

Yes, you can run offset papers on digital press. All Munken papers are optimized for offset printing, but they perform great even on laser, inkjet and flexo press. However, it’s recommended to print samples and try out their inks for better understanding. Also, Papersmiths doesn’t represent any particular brand of ink.

There are many ways to determine compatible paper for press:

  • Your printer is your first resource. They have seen it all and can recommend the most compatible paper for press.
  • The product description on Papersmiths website offers you complete information about the appropriateness of a paper for a particular print type.
  • The third source is our paper expert. Send us an inquiry by filling out an online form. One of our paper experts will get back to you within one business day.

Munken papers are optimized for offset printing. All six variants with smooth and rough texture are highly recommended for offset printing. These are uncoated premium papers for excellent print performance.

Not at all. In fact, coated papers are known for their exceptional ink holdout, color reproduction and print performance.

The key to great results is the communication between design, production and printing teams. Once the message is formulated, the conversations between printing, designing and production teams help decide 1) how a message to be conveyed; 2) how should it look; and 3) what type of paper will deliver the desired results.

Also, to ensure print quality:

  • Paper must be free from dust before it goes to the press.
  • Use food quality paper. Paper is subjected to electrostatic charges during print and image transfer process. A paper with ordinary technical virtues may result in curling and poor image quality.
  • Suitable smoothness level is required. Excessive roughness of a paper surface can result in dry ink fusing failure. Moreover, an incorrect ink results in smearing or smudging.

At Papersmiths, we sell premium quality papers that are environmentally friendly. Most of our offerings are FSC and PEFC certified, indicating that they have been manufactured with minimum environment footprint. Though slightly expensive, these help you meet government mandates as well as reduce your environment footprint. Moreover, these are safe for children also. Plus they are long lasting.

Handling and Storage

It’s very important to have a proper crease or score for a paper to fold well. It’s highly recommended to use a rounded rule to obtain best results.

  • Stack the reams of paper carefully on top of one another.
  • The storage must be wide enough to comfortably accommodate the sheets or reels, in order to avoid curling or crushing of edges.
  • Do not open the seal of the reams until you want to load them into the printer.
  • Maintain optimum temperature in the room where paper is stored. It is 20 to 25 degree Celsius.
  • Humidity control is important. Areas with a relative humidity of 35% to 55% are considered good for proper storage.
  • Do not place paper directly onto the floor. It increases the possibility of moisture absorption.
